Amazing!! That's the only thing I can describe about Cambridge. Its architecture designs are very amazing although I'm not these kinda fan actually. Its like being in one of Harry Potter's movies.
We arrived in London on 13/3 night. Aban came to Stansted Airport to pick us up. Spent the nite at Aban's house in Cambridge.
The next day, went to visit a few colleges in Cambridge. Our first stop was Jesus College (masa ni lagi dah kagum dgn building2 dia..) which was founded in 1496 and originally a nunnery.
The next one we visited was St. John’s College. It was founded in 1518 by the mother of King Henry VII, Lady Margaret Beaufort. St John is the second largest college in Cambridge with 135 fellows, 530 undergrads and 300 postgrads. I was told that the movie Elizabeth : The Golden Age starring Cate Blanchett was filmed at St. John’s Court.
Visitors to this college are charged a £2.80 entrance fee. Since we went there with Aban, we can enter for free. Yippeee!!!
Then we walked along Clare’s College, the second oldest college in Cambridge. It was founded in 1386.
I think one of the main attraction to this college is its bridge. One of the stone sculptures on the bridge was not round. ¼ part of it was missing. It was said that during the construction of the bridge, the contractor didn’t agree with the term of payment or something, so he “took” ¼ of the stone as a sign of protest.
This college also has been used for filming one of Harry Potter’s movies especially this particular walkway.
King’s College was undoubtedly the most famous college in Cambridge because of its chapel. Its chapel was said to be the largest and most spectacular chapel in Cambridge and the home of the world’s famous choir. It was found in 1441 by Henry VII. The design of the chapel from my opinion is similar to The Dome in Cologne, Germany. It was said that during Christmas, the chapel will be loaded with people.
Then we walked along King’s Road and passed by The Great St. Catherine Church. Its the official church for Cambridge.
Opposite the church is the Senate House or also known as the parliament of Cambridge. It is where the graduation ceremony takes place.
Then we passed by Cambridge University Bookshop which was said to be the oldest bookshop in Cambridge, since 1581.
After that we went to Trinity College, the college where Sir Isaac Newton used to stay and study in the 17th century. It has the largest court among all the other colleges in Cambridge.
Then we went home for lunch. Daddy and Aban went to the mosque to perform their Friday prayers. After that, off we went for more sightseeing. This time, our first stop was St. Catherine’s College which was founded in 1473 and was the college of our first prime minister, Tuanku Abdul Rahman.
Queen’s College is famous for its wooden mathematical bridge which we didn’t get to see.
But we got to see its dining room being prepared for an official dinner I think. It really looks like a scene in Harry Potter’s movie. Hehe..
The famous outdoor activity in Cambridge is River Punting. We can either hire someone to punt our boat or we can just punt it ourselves. It looks really fun.
After that we went back to Aban’s house for some cakes and off we went to East London to have dinner with Zaitul at her house. Then Aban sent us back to Kak Ina’s house in Shepherd’s Bush.
To Aban, Zura and Daud, thank you so much for the hospitality. Really appreciate it.
Terima Kasih daun keladi, kalau buleh kami mai lagi..hehehe...
One of the signboard I found at Cambridge. Very interesting...
