Woke up early the next day. Had light breakfast with coffee and leftover bekal. Checked out from the hotel and walked to the harbour or Landungsbrücken.
Along the way to the harbour, we saw a lot of homeless people sleeping under the bridge and at the nearby park. Who will imagine a first world country like Germany would still have homeless people living under their roof . Never mind that. After we arrived at Landungbrücken, it was still early and only a few souvenir shops were opened. Took a few photos and off we went on the S-bahn (subway line) to the city centre.
Since our train to Berlin is scheduled at 12 noon, we decided to stroll along the main street in Hamburg and took some photos.
Our journey to Berlin was on the Intercity Express or ICE train. This train was faster than the DSB train we took from Copenhagen but the seats were smaller. The journey took about 1 ½ hours from Hamburg to Berlin. The funniest part was when we went on ANY trains, be it the subways or long distance train, we will end up having the coach to ourselves (ye la, asyik memekak je kat dlm tu). Imagine 8 chatty adults (3 of them can talk non-stop for a few hours) with 2 loud kids yg asyik jalan ke depan & belakang coach non-stop…All the mat salehs cabut lari bila kitorg masuk..
Arrived at Berlin-Spandau Hauptbanhoff at about 1.30 pm.
Our hotel was just next to the train station. It’s the same chain of hotel that we stayed in Hamburg, Ibis Berlin-Spandau Hotel. But the receptionist here was sooooo rude. She kept yelling at me everytime I asked her something. Sampai aku fed-up, terus membebel dlm bahasa melayu . Ha amik kau, baru ternganga..After checking in, solat, refresh and nappy changing, we went straight to the train station and bought our group ticket. To anyone who’s going on a holiday in a European country (especially in groups), ask for group tickets when traveling within the city. Usually these kind of tickets are much much cheaper that the normal ones.
Our first stop was supposed to be Siegessäule or also known as the Victory Column. Its an observation tower that overlooks a big part of Berlin such as the Brandenburger Tor (Brandenburg Gate) and Reichstag. Unfortunately, the map that we got from the hotel got 1 tiny mistake that made us lost (map tu letak landmark terbalik, so kitorg berjalan di arah yg salah) . After that, not wanting to waste any time since its already 4 pm, we decided to go straight to Brandenburger Tor or also known as Tembok Berlin by Malaysian.
Another incident occurred while we were at the S-bahn station to go to there. The daddies were greeted by 3 police officers. This is a routine check for the police here. But the problem was, it took about 40 minutes for them to confirm that we entered their country legitimately. We lost nearly 1 hour of our precious time there.
Then we went straight to Brandenburger Tor which was built in 1778 and 1791. It was designed by Carl Gotthard. The infamous Berlin Wall was built much later, in 1961. The wall was the divider between East Berlin & West Berlin then. Most parts of the wall were demolished in 1989 but there are still remnants of the it in some part of Berlin.
Then we took some photos with the “communist” man at Pariser Platz.
Near Brandenburger Tor is Reichstag, the parliament building during the German Empire. The construction of the building took 10 years (1884 – 1894). But in 1933, the building was caught on fire which destroyed most parts of the Reichstag.
...errr, kat belakang tu le Reichstag...
After that, we went to the souvenir shop at Pariser Platz to buy some souvenirs and had some doughnuts at Dunkin Donuts next to the shop.
Since it was dark, we decided to go straight for dinner. We went to Amy’s Malaysian Restaurant at Wilmersdorfer Straβe 79, 10629 Berlin. On the way, we stopped by at Alexander Platz to take some photos. There was Festival of Lights in Berlin when we were there. No wonder the buildings were showered with colourful lights at night. Unfortunately, our cameras can’t capture the beauty of the lights coz we didn’t have the high-tech cameras (pakai cybershot je, lepas ni masing2 kena beli camera bagak2 tu la).
At Amy’s, we were served with ikan masak merah, beef curry, sayur campur, udang masak lemak, teh tarik and 5 BIG BOWLS of rice, all cooked and prepared by Amy herself.
Her foods were marvellousssss…and Mel, the waiter was very nice and patient attending to our non-stop needs of rice..And Amy even gave us special discount that night. Thank you so very much to Amy, Mel & Amy’s husband (sorry, lupa nama) for your hospitality and kindness. Tausend Dank!! I really2 suggest anybody who’s going to Berlin to stop by at Amy’s and taste her food. We are very proud of her for wanting to take the risk and promote Malaysian food and subsequently Malaysia to Germans. If we ever go to Berlin again, we’ll definitely stop by at Amy’s.
To be continued...
