After been driving for about 3 hours from Hamburg, we arrived in Odense, the capital of Fyn and the third largest city in Denmark. Odense is famous for its well known fairy tales author, Hans Christian Andersen or better known as H.C Andersen.
H.C Andersen was born on 2nd of April 1805 in Odense, Denmark. He was the only son of a poor shoemaker and washerwoman. He was famous for his fairy tales such as The Ugly Duckling, The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Pea & The Emperor's New Clothes. He died in 1875 of liver cancer in his friend's house.
Den Lille Havfrue or The Little Mermaid statue was built in 1909 by the founder of Carlsberg Breweries who were fascinated with the story. But this little mermaid has been vandalised a few times. She's been painted (ada skali tu kena cat as if dia pakai tudung..hehehe), decapitated 3 times and had her arm amputated. She was even pushed from the rock she's sitting. Luckily the manufacturer made a mould for the statue. So, its easy for them to replace any of her body parts that is missing. (Ganas jugak org Denmark nie...kuat vandalism).
Today, Odense is also known as H.C Andersens By which means H.C Andersen's Town. His childhood house is turned into a museum in 1908 where they exhibit the original manuscripts, drawings and papercuts of his works. Unfortunately for us, we arrived there 10 minutes after the closing time of the museum. (Mmg frust la sbb teringin sgt2 nak masuk muzium dia). We ended up "skodeng-ing" thru the windows and walked along Odense's Shopping Street.
Then we continued our journey back to Copenhagen. Since Odense itself is an island, we have to cross the sea via Storebælt or The Great Belt Bridge to reach Copenhagen. It is the longest suspension bridge in the world which connects two main islands in Denmark, Zealand (where Copenhagen is) and Fyn. The view along the bridge was magnificent. The journey took about 1 hour and 15 minutes by car. Dah tu..home sweet home...
